Using Poetry to teach the Civil War

In my Language Arts classes we are learning about acrostic poems so I thought it would be interesting to write one about Clara Barton.  First, what is an acrostic poem?  An acrostic poem is where the first letter or word of each line in the text spells out a certain message.

So here is my Clara Barton acrostic poem:

Caring for her brother

Loved riding her horse

Angel of the Battlefield

Recorded names of dead soldiers at Andersonville Prison

American Red Cross Founder

Born in 1821 in New Oxford, Massachusetts

American Red Cross also helps in times of disaster

Recognized for giving speeches about her war time experiences

Teacher from 1839 till 1854

Organized a missing soldiers support group

Nurse at the Battle of Antietam

So you see, it is easy to learn about different things during the Civil War besides in just history class.  You can read more Civil War poetry at: The Civil War Poetry Page

I loved your poem Sarah. I especially liked how you used meaningful phrases for your acrostic instead of single words. Have you ever tried to write an acrostic in rhyme?

You have a natural ease and flow in your writing, and the poem was a perfect way to organize new information about Clara Barton for your readers! Your research obviously was thorough, giving you enough information to pick the most interesting facts for your poem. It was fascinating! Thanks for teaching me about Clara Barton!

Your post was wonderful. I love acrostic poems and Clara Barton.

When I was in middle school, I read a biography of her, and I was very impressed with her stick-to-it attitude.

You write well, and I can tell that you enjoyed your topic and assignment. That is what real learning is all about. I look forward to reading more of your work.
